Beyond KP4: Plant Ageing and Life Extension Workshop – HSL Buxton, 30 June 2015

Learning from HSE’s Inspection Programme KP4

Date and location

30 June 2015, Health and Safety Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9JN

Event overview

The life extension of ageing assets is a key challenge for many organisations, but particularly for those in mature industrial sectors. Effective Aging Life Extension (ALE) can provide safe and efficient use of assets beyond their original design life, but this needs a good understanding of the factors that influence the relevant degradation mechanisms. Effective decisions about the implications of ageing and its management to achieve life extension can then be made.

Between 2010 and 2014, HSE’s Energy Division carried out an extensive programme (entitled Key Programme 4 – KP4) which focused on the issue of Ageing and Life Extension in the offshore sector, recognising that most of the UK’s offshore assets are now operating past their design life and in the harsh environment of the North Sea. The aim of the inspection programme was to investigate the impact of ALE on the risk of safety related failures, and particularly major accidents on an offshore installation.

What will the course cover?

The objective of this workshop is to share the learning and recommendations from the KP4 ALE programme across a range of hazardous industries. It will support operators of Hazardous Plant in addressing the key issues of managing ALE risks.

Topics to be covered will include:

  • Leadership; Leading Key Performance Indicators Management of Creeping Change, drawing on best practice from offshore and other industries
  • Data Trending, including understanding what to measure and how to effectively analyse and use the information obtained. This again will draw on experience and practice from offshore and across major hazard industries
  • Action Planning

The workshop will include an introduction from the previous head of HSE’s Energy Division, presentations from key HSL staff involved in the programme and case study input from industry. Large sections of the workshop are interactive and will provide an opportunity to discuss specific problems as well as investigate examples from industry

Who should attend?

Anyone with responsibility for asset integrity or life extension of assets should attend this workshop to obtain a good understanding of controlling key ALE risks in major hazard industries. The workshop will be suitable for representatives from all hazardous industries who want to learn from KP4 and how it applies in their area.
